For the tour of the La Rance tidal power plant on October 14, 2008

Électricité de France(EDF) has been operating the La Rance tidal power plant for over 40 years. This tour is an opportunity for EDF to explain how the facility is operated, how it fits into the surrounding estuary environment, and to point out the part it takes in the development of local industry and tourism.

The power plant was opened in 1966. It generates electricity from sea water, whether the tide is going in or out. It is the only sizeable power production facility in Brittany as it powers the homes of 223,000 inhabitants every year, i.e. roughly the consumption of a town the size of Rennes. It is also one of the very few existing tidal power plants in the world.

On October 14, 2008, ICOE 2008 offers the following tour to the first 60 registered participants:

  • 6:30 Bus departs from the Le Quartz conference centre in Brest
  • 9:00 Welcome to the Discovery Area of the La Rance power plant
  • 9:30-12:00pm Tour of the La Rance power plant
  • Lunch at the La Cale de Mordreuc restaurant
  • 14:00-17:00 Tour of the Prat tide mill
  • 20:00 Back to Brest
